CUSTOMIZED MEDICINE FOR

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

UNDERSTANDING ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence is when an individual is regularly unable to achieve an erection or keep it firm enough for sexual intercourse. ED is a common sex problem reported to providers and may be caused by an underlying health issue. Therefore, it is important to talk to your doctor if you are suffering from symptoms of erectile dysfunction so the underlying health condition can be treated. Symptoms can include the following:

  • Reduced sexual desire or libido
  • Trouble getting an erection
  • Difficulty sustaining an erection
  • Premature or delayed ejaculation
  • Inability to ejaculate

For patients in which treating the underlying health condition does not resolve the symptoms of ED, doctors may prescribe medicine such as tadalafil, sildenafil, or compounded options such as sublingual tadalafil lozenges or self-injections.

In addition, men experiencing andropause may see a decrease in their libido or suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED). Doctors will often check a patient's testosterone level to see if the patient may benefit from hormone replacement therapy first.

Hormone Therapy for Men

COMPOUNDED INJECTIONS

Trimix and other compounded injection therapy may be beneficial to those patients not responding to oral treatment. A local injection into the penis shaft causes the blood vessels to dilate and this increase in blood flow results in an erection. Because the medication is injected locally, patients usually experience minimal side effects.

Examples of combination intracavernosal injectable medications are:

  • Bimix: Papaverine and Phentolamine
  • Trimix: Papaverine, Phentolamine, and Alprostadil
  • Quadmix: Papaverine, Phentolamine, Alprostadil, and Atropine

ORAL THERAPY

For patients whose needs are not met with the commercially available products, our pharmacy has the ability to compound a variety of strengths and dosage forms of ED medications. For example, a compounded lozenge of tadalafil or sildenafil allows the medicine to absorb through the oral mucosa resulting in a quicker onset of action.
